The short answer

These are the two ends of Velotric’s range and, on weight, the two ends of this site. The T1 ST Plus is 39 lb, rated to 330 lb, runs 700 × 40c tires on a rigid fork and has a torque sensor. The Packer 1 is 75 lb, rated to 440 lb with up to 176 lb of that on the rear rack, runs a 26-inch front and 20-inch rear wheel, and stops with the only four-piston brakes we cover. Buy the T1 ST Plus if the problem is getting the bike up the stairs. Buy the Packer 1 if the problem is getting a passenger, two children or a week of shopping across town. There is no rider for whom both are sensible.

Velotric sells three bikes we cover, and these are the outer two. The T1 ST Plus is $1,399. The Packer 1 is $2,199.

Eight hundred dollars is the smallest of the differences.

The T1 ST Plus is by a wide margin the lightest bike on this site: the next lightest is VTUVIA’s SF20H at 60 lb. The Packer 1 at 75 lb is the heaviest of the ten hub-motor bikes we cover. It is not the heaviest bike here — EUNORAU’s FLASH and SPECTER-S are mid-drives at around 110 lb apiece — but among hub motors nothing else comes close.

Two T1 ST Pluses weigh 78 lb. That is a slightly silly way to put it and it is also the clearest one: the Packer is very nearly two of the other bike.

Payload runs the same way, and further

The T1 ST Plus is rated to 330 lb all in — rider, clothing, lock, bag and contents. The Packer 1 is rated to 440 lb, joint highest on this site alongside the Nomad 1 Plus, and of that 440 lb, up to 176 lb may sit on the rear rack.

The 176 lb figure is the only rack load rating Velotric publishes for a bike here, and it is not a pannier number. It covers an adult passenger, or two children, or a proper shop.

four and a half T1 ST Pluses

176 ÷ 39 ≈ 4.5. The rear rack of one bike is rated to carry four and a half of the other. Add the two figures up and the whole story is there: the T1 ST Plus and its rider come to a maximum of 369 lb on the road; the Packer 1 and everything it is allowed to carry come to 515 lb.

Our guide for heavier riders explains why a payload figure is really a statement about wheels, spokes, frame and brakes rather than a number the marketing department chose. Note also that the 176 lb sits inside the 440, not on top of it: load the rack fully and 264 lb is left for you and your kit.

For the T1 ST Plus, Velotric publishes no rack rating at all, which is consistent — a 39 lb bike built around not carrying a large battery is not a bike built around carrying anything else either.

The energy, and the eight hundred dollars

$1,399 ÷ 352.8Wh = $3.97 per watt-hour. $2,199 ÷ 691.2Wh = $3.18 per watt-hour.

Both figures sit high. The T1 ST Plus is the most expensive stored energy on this site; EUNORAU’s SPECTER-S at $3.57 is second; the Packer 1 at $3.18 is third. So this is a comparison between the dearest energy we cover and the third dearest, which is an odd thing to be able to say about two bikes from the same brand.

Read the gap the other way and it is more useful. 691.2 − 352.8 = 338.4Wh more in the Packer, for $800. That is $2.36 for each additional watt-hour, which is more than twice what the same step costs going from the T1 to the Nomad 1 Plus — because on the Packer you are not buying energy with the $800, you are buying a rack rating, a set of brakes and a frame.

How watt-hours become miles explains why $/Wh is normally the right first question. This is one of the few pairs on the site where it is the wrong one.

Range, with Velotric’s conditions attached

Velotric is the only brand here that publishes the conditions behind a range claim, and we quote them every time.

T1 ST Plus: up to 70 miles pedal assist, at a 187-lb rider using PAS 1 in Eco on flat roads. 352.8Wh ÷ 70 ≈ 5.0Wh per mile.

Packer 1: up to 52 miles pedal assist and up to 45 miles on throttle, at a 187-lb rider using PAS 1 on flat roads. 691.2Wh ÷ 52 ≈ 13.3Wh per mile assisted; 691.2Wh ÷ 45 ≈ 15.4Wh per mile on throttle.

Five watt-hours a mile is a very light draw, lighter than most riders will see even on a 39 lb bike with a torque sensor. Thirteen is plausible for a 75 lb cargo bike ridden gently on the flat — with, and this is the part the footnote does not say out loud, nothing on the rack.

Now use figures you might actually meet. A light bike with narrow tires and a torque sensor draws roughly 10 to 15Wh per mile at moderate assist: 352.8Wh ÷ 12 ≈ 29 miles. Plan on 25 to 30 for the T1 ST Plus. A loaded cargo bike moving 75 lb of bicycle plus a rider plus a hundred pounds of anything draws well past 30Wh per mile: 691.2Wh ÷ 30 ≈ 23 miles. Plan on 20 to 25 fully loaded for the Packer 1, and rather more when the rack is empty.

Brakes: 160 mm against four pistons

This is the pair’s sharpest contrast in hardware, and the one where the common assumption is wrong.

The T1 ST Plus runs TEKTRO hydraulic discs on 160 mm rotors. That is the smallest rotor on this site — nothing else here is stated below 180 mm — and it is entirely defensible, because 39 lb plus a 330 lb ceiling is far less to stop than anything else here.

The Packer 1 runs four-piston hydraulic discs on 180 mm rotors.

On a 75 lb bike carrying up to 176 lb on the back, that is not a specification, it is the thing that decides how a descent ends.

Wheels, tires and suspension

The T1 ST Plus runs KENDA 700 × 40c tires — the largest rim on this site on much the narrowest tire — with no suspension of any kind. The fork is rigid 6061 aluminium on a 12 × 100 mm thru-axle. It is the only bike we cover with no suspension at all, and on a 39 lb bike that is a weight decision rather than a cost one. On broken tarmac it reports everything.

The Packer 1 is the only mixed-wheel bike here: 26 inches at the front and 20 at the rear, on CST 26 × 2.4 and 20 × 3.0 tires. The small rear wheel drops the load deck closer to the ground, which makes a loaded bike far more stable and much easier to get on and off its stand; keeping 26 inches at the front leaves the steering and the kerb behaviour normal. Its fork is 80 mm of hydraulic travel with a lock-out on a 15 × 110 mm thru-axle. Both bikes use thru-axles, which is worth a nod: it is the one place these two agree about how a front wheel should be held.

The cost of the Packer’s arrangement is two tire sizes to keep spares for. The cost of the T1’s is that sand, snow and loose gravel are simply off the menu.

Motor, sensor and the assist you feel

Forty newton-metres from a 350W motor, peaking at 600W, against 75 Nm from a 750W motor whose peak Velotric does not publish.

Those are the lowest torque and the lowest rated output on this site, against a figure that has to move nearly twice the bike and up to 176 lb more besides. That is not a close contest and it should not be read as one: the T1 ST Plus is adequate on rolling ground and thin on a sustained loaded climb, and the Packer 1 needs every one of its 75 Nm. And then the inversion that runs through Velotric’s whole range. The T1 ST Plus has a torque sensor; the Packer 1, at eight hundred dollars more, has a cadence sensor.

A cadence sensor asks only whether the pedals are turning and applies your chosen assist level if they are. A torque sensor measures how hard you press and scales the motor to match, so the assist rises when you stand on the pedals and fades when you ease off. On a loaded 75 lb cargo bike, pulling away from a standstill with a cadence system is the manoeuvre you will get most practice at. Speed, fit and what is not published

The T1 ST Plus is stated as Class 1 and Class 3: it ships at 20 MPH and adjusts between 12 and 28 MPH. Class 3 is barred from some bike paths and permitted on roads in most US states, and the setting is yours along with the responsibility for checking your local rule. The Packer 1 is stated as Class 2, 20 MPH by default and 25 MPH unlocked.

Fit is the Packer’s worst omission. Velotric publishes a rider-height range for both of its other bikes and none at all for this one, which is exactly backwards: a cargo frame is where standover and reach decide whether you can hold a loaded bike upright at a standstill. The T1 ST Plus comes in one size, Regular, and one colour, Lava; the Packer comes in Sky Blue or Indigo Gray.

Elsewhere the disclosure runs the cheaper bike’s way as well. The T1 publishes a peak motor output, a rotor diameter, a chainring size, a crank length and a cassette range; the Packer publishes none of the five, listing its drivetrain simply as Shimano 8-speed and its display as a backlit LCD without a size. The T1’s display is a 1.8-inch colour unit with Bluetooth. Neither bike publishes a charge time.

What the Packer does state, and the T1 does not, is how its battery is mounted: a lockable integrated down-tube pack, which is neat and hard to steal and cannot come indoors on its own. On a 75 lb bike that is the one place the choice really costs you.

Both bikes carry the same paperwork: UL 2849 for the system, UL 2271 for the pack, UL 2580 cells, ISO 4210 for the frame, and IPX6 — for the T1 that is the bike with an IPX7 battery, and for the Packer it is stated in the page copy rather than the specification table.

The decision

There is no shared buyer here, so the decision is really a question about your week.

If the recurring problem is that the bike has to go somewhere a bike does not easily go — up a flight of stairs, onto a car rack you load alone, into a lift, through a flat — buy the T1 ST Plus. Thirty-nine pounds is the entire argument and it is a very good one. You get the torque sensor, hydraulic brakes, tires that roll instead of drag, both UL numbers and a bike that is genuinely pleasant to pedal. Accept the smallest battery on this site, the most expensive energy on it, and a planning range of 25 to 30 miles.

If the recurring problem is that you need to move a person or a load and a car is the current answer, buy the Packer 1. The 176 lb rack rating, the four-piston brakes and the low rear deck are the reason it exists, and nothing bolted to a lighter bike replaces them. Accept 75 lb, a cadence sensor, an integrated battery, 20 to 25 miles loaded, and ask Velotric for a rider-height range in writing before you order.

Common questions

Is the Packer 1 the heaviest bike on this site?

No, and the distinction is worth keeping straight. At 75 lb it is the heaviest of the ten hub-motor bikes we cover, which is a real claim. But EUNORAU’s FLASH 2.0 and SPECTER-S 3.0 are mid-drives weighing about 110 lb apiece, so the Packer is not the heaviest bike here overall. The T1 ST Plus at 39 lb is the lightest on the site by a wide margin, with VTUVIA’s SF20H next at 60 lb.

What does the extra $800 buy?

Not battery, mostly. 691.2 − 352.8 = 338.4Wh more for $800, or $2.36 per additional watt-hour, which is more than twice what the same step costs going from the T1 ST Plus to the Nomad 1 Plus. What the money really buys is a 440 lb payload with 176 lb of it rated for the rear rack, four-piston brakes on 180 mm rotors, an 80 mm hydraulic fork, the 26-inch front and 20-inch rear wheel split, fitted fenders and a dual-leg centre kickstand. If you carry nothing, almost none of that will ever be used.

Which one goes further?

On the claims, the T1 ST Plus: up to 70 miles against up to 52, both quoted for a 187-lb rider using PAS 1 on flat roads. On realistic draws the gap narrows a lot. 352.8Wh at 10 to 15Wh per mile gives the T1 about 25 to 30 miles; 691.2Wh in a loaded 75 lb cargo bike drawing past 30Wh per mile gives the Packer about 20 to 25. The Packer with an empty rack sits somewhere above that. A bike with half the battery gets most of the way there by weighing half as much.

Are the Packer’s 180 mm rotors unusual?

The rotors are not; the calipers are. VTUVIA and EUNORAU fit 180 mm rotors as well, and on this site only the T1 ST Plus runs anything smaller at 160 mm. What is unique to the Packer 1 is that its calipers have four pistons, where every other caliper we cover has two. Four pistons press a longer pad with more even force, giving more braking power for the same effort at the lever and far better resistance to fade — which is what a 75 lb bike carrying up to 176 lb needs.

Can I use the T1 ST Plus for shopping or the school run?

For a rucksack and a light load, yes. For anything approaching cargo, no. Velotric rates the T1 ST Plus to 330 lb in total and publishes no rack load rating for it; the Packer 1 is rated to 440 lb with up to 176 lb specifically on the rear rack, which is the figure that makes a passenger or a child seat a stated capability rather than an improvisation. If your loads are real, the difference between the two bikes is not a matter of degree.

Why does the cheaper bike have the torque sensor?

It is the pattern across Velotric’s range: the $1,399 T1 ST Plus has a torque sensor and both dearer bikes, the $1,899 Nomad 1 Plus and the $2,199 Packer 1, have cadence sensors. One plausible reading is that the T1’s 352.8Wh pack — the smallest on this site — could not afford anything else, since a torque sensor scales assist to effort and so draws less over a mixed ride. Whatever the reason, if assist feel is what you care about, the money in this range points the wrong way.
