Our verdict — FULL SUSPENSION

The FMB is the only mid-drive and the only full-suspension bike in VTUVIA’s range, and it is built from parts you can look up: a Bafang G510 rated at 1000W with a 1300W peak and 160 Nm, an SR Suntour XCM32 fork, an EXA air shock at the rear and 27.5 × 2.8-inch Maxxis tires. A mid-drive puts its power through the gears rather than the hub, so it climbs steep loose ground in a way no hub motor here can match. Then you reach the battery. It is 672Wh — the same pack as the $1,399 SF20H — on a $2,999 bike, which is $4.46 per watt-hour and the most expensive stored energy on this site, ahead of Velotric’s T1 ST Plus at $3.97. VTUVIA is at least straight about what that buys you: the claimed range is 30 to 50 miles, not the 70 they print for the same pack elsewhere, and that honesty is worth saying out loud. Buy the FMB for the drivetrain and the suspension. You are not buying watt-hours, and the listing does not pretend you are.

Buy it if

  • You ride proper trail. Full suspension with a named fork and an air rear shock is not something the rest of VTUVIA’s range offers at any price.
  • You climb steep, loose ground where a hub motor stalls. A mid-drive using the gears is a different tool.
  • You want the most torque VTUVIA publishes — 160 Nm, against 100 Nm on the Gemini.
  • You want 27.5 × 2.8-inch Maxxis tires rather than 4-inch fat tires, for a bike that turns rather than ploughs.

Skip it if

  • You are buying range. 672Wh at $2,999 is $4.46 per watt-hour, the most expensive energy on this site.
  • You want to know what stops it. The listing publishes nothing at all about the brakes.

Check it: 672Wh over 50 miles is 13.4Wh per mile, and over 30 miles it is 22.4Wh per mile — and 22.4Wh per mile is close to what a mid-drive on 27.5 × 2.8-inch tires actually draws. This is the one range claim in VTUVIA’s line-up whose lower end matches the arithmetic.

FMB — common questions

Why does this page show no discount when VTUVIA lists a higher-looking crossed-out price?

Because the numbers are the wrong way round. VTUVIA’s listing carries a compare-at price of $2,199 against a selling price of $2,999 — the "was" price is $800 lower than the "now" price. That is a data-entry error in the merchant’s own record, not a discount and not a price rise, and presenting it as either would mislead you. We have set no original price for the FMB and we show no saving until VTUVIA corrects the field.

Is the FMB good value?

Not on energy, and it is worth doing that sum plainly. $2,999 for 672Wh is $4.46 per watt-hour, the highest figure on this site — ahead of Velotric’s T1 ST Plus at $3.97, and against $0.72 for AMYET’s G60. What you are buying instead is a Bafang G510 mid-drive, 160 Nm, a named fork and an air rear shock. Those are expensive parts and they do things no hub-motor bike here does. Judge it on the drivetrain and the suspension, because on watt-hours it is the worst buy we cover.

What does a mid-drive actually change?

Where the power goes in. A hub motor drives the wheel directly, at whatever speed the wheel happens to be turning; a mid-drive drives the cranks, so it passes through your gears and can be geared down for a steep climb exactly as your legs are. That is why 160 Nm at the crank climbs loose, steep ground that stalls a hub motor. The costs are a chain and cassette that wear faster, and no drive at all if the chain comes off.

How far will it really go?

VTUVIA claims 30 to 50 miles, and unusually the lower end of that band stands up to arithmetic. 672Wh over 50 miles works out at 13.4Wh per mile, which is optimistic; over 30 miles it is 22.4Wh per mile, which is close to what a mid-drive on 2.8-inch tires draws on mixed ground. On real trail, with climbing, expect the low end. VTUVIA claiming 30 to 50 here while claiming 70 from the same pack on their cheaper bikes is the most honest range statement in their line-up.

What brakes does it have?

VTUVIA does not say. Not the type, not the brand, not the rotor size — nothing, on the most expensive bike they sell and the one with the most torque. They name LOGAN hydraulic brakes and 180mm rotors on bikes at half the price, so the silence here is conspicuous rather than customary. We are not going to assume a full-suspension mid-drive has hydraulics because it ought to. Ask VTUVIA before you order.
