Two bikes with one motor, one torque figure and one battery between them. The money goes entirely on carrying capacity, and the question is whether you carry anything.

The short answer
These two share a 750W rear hub motor, a 75 Nm torque figure, a cadence sensor, a 440 lb total payload and, to within a fifth of a watt-hour, the same battery. The $300 between them buys the Packer 1 a rear rack rated to 176 lb, four-piston brakes, mixed 26-inch and 20-inch wheels, fitted fenders and a dual-leg kickstand. It costs you four to five pounds, a removable battery and a published rider-height range. Buy the Packer 1 only if you carry things — a passenger, children, a weekly shop. If your load is a bag and a lock, the Nomad 1 Plus is the better bike and the cheaper one.
Velotric lists the Nomad 1 Plus at $1,899 and the Packer 1 at $2,199. Lay the two specification sheets side by side and the top half is almost a duplicate.
Both run a 750W rear hub motor. Both state 75 Nm and neither publishes a peak output. Both use a cadence sensor. Both take an 80 mm hydraulic front fork with a lock-out. Both are rated to 440 lb all in — the joint highest figure on this site. Both state UL 2849 and UL 2271, name UL 2580 cells and cite ISO 4210. Both run a Shimano 8-speed. Neither publishes a charge time.
And the batteries are 691Wh and 691.2Wh respectively.

what the extra $300 adds to the battery
That is not a rounding artefact we have introduced; it is what Velotric publishes. The Nomad’s sheet says 691Wh. The Packer’s says 48V 14.4Ah, which multiplies out to 691.2Wh. For practical purposes it is the same pack in both bikes, and none of the $300 goes into it.
Which means the energy costs more on the dearer bike
$1,899 ÷ 691Wh = $2.75 per watt-hour. $2,199 ÷ 691.2Wh = $3.18 per watt-hour. Forty-three cents a watt-hour, or about 16 per cent more, for stored energy that is identical in quantity.
The Nomad is the better value of the two on that measure and mid-table across the site as a whole. The Packer at $3.18/Wh is the third most expensive energy we cover, behind Velotric’s own T1 ST Plus at $3.97 and EUNORAU’s SPECTER-S at $3.57. That is worth saying plainly, because $/Wh is the number this site normally leans on, and here it points at the bike we would still recommend to a particular buyer. What the $300 actually buys
Five things, and they are all about carrying.
The 176 lb rack rating
The Packer’s rear rack is rated at 176 lb. That is the only rack load rating Velotric publishes for a bike on this site, and it is a different order of number from a pannier rating: it covers an adult passenger, or two children, or a week of shopping and a case of something heavy.
The Nomad has no published rack rating at all. You can fit a rack to it, and any rack you fit will carry what that rack is rated to carry — the VTUVIA Zeal LT7, for one, sells a rear rack separately with its own 50 lb figure. The distinction is not the rack, though. It is the frame and the rear triangle underneath it, and that is what Velotric has rated.
The arithmetic worth doing before you get excited: 440 lb is the total, and the 176 lb sits inside it, not on top of it. Load the rack fully and 264 lb is left for you, your clothing, your bag and the lock. That is generous but not infinite, and our guide for heavier riders explains why a payload figure is really a statement about wheels, spokes and brakes.
Four pistons
The Packer runs four-piston hydraulic disc brakes on 180 mm rotors. The Nomad’s sheet says only "hydraulic disc brakes" — no rotor diameter, no piston count, which is a gap on a 70 lb bike rated to 440 lb.
If the Packer is doing the job it was built for, that matters more than any other line here. A 75 lb bike carrying 176 lb on the back is working near its limit, and the brake is the component that decides how that ends.
The 26-inch front, 20-inch rear wheel split
The Packer is the only mixed-wheel bike we cover. The small rear wheel drops the load deck closer to the ground, which makes a loaded bike markedly more stable and easier to get on and off its stand. Keeping 26 inches at the front means the steering and the kerb behaviour stay normal — shrinking the front wheel instead would make a loaded bike twitchy and harsh.
The tires follow from that: CST 26 × 2.4 at the front and 20 × 3.0 at the rear. The Nomad runs 26 × 4.0 puncture-resistant fat tires at both ends.
So this is also a surface decision, and it runs against the price. The Nomad floats on sand, snow and loose gravel in a way the Packer does not; the Packer rolls more easily on tarmac and gives up the float. The cost of the Packer’s arrangement is two tire sizes to keep spares for and a bike that looks slightly odd parked next to anything else.
Fenders, a dual-leg kickstand and internal routing
Fitted as standard on the Packer, with an IPX6 rating for the bike itself. Velotric publishes no water-resistance rating for the Nomad’s frame, only IPX7 for its battery.
The dual-leg centre-mount kickstand is easy to overlook and hard to do without. A loaded bike on a side stand leans, and a leaning bike with 100 lb on the rack is a bike on the ground. A centre stand holds it upright while you load it.
And the class designation
The Packer is stated as Class 2: 20 MPH by default, 25 MPH unlocked. For the Nomad, Velotric states 20 MPH and no class designation at all, where it gives one for both of its stablemates. With a removable thumb throttle at 20 MPH it reads as a Class 2 bike, but that is our reading of the specification rather than Velotric’s claim, and we would not put it on a form for you.
What the $300 costs
Four things, and they are not trivial.
Four to five pounds. The Packer is 75 lb. The Nomad is 71 lb in high-step and 70 lb in step-through. The Packer is the heaviest hub-motor bike on this site — not the heaviest bike, since EUNORAU’s FLASH and SPECTER-S are both around 110 lb, but the heaviest of the ten hub-motor machines here.
The removable battery. The Nomad’s pack comes out. The Packer’s is a lockable integrated down-tube battery, which is neater, harder to steal and impossible to carry indoors on its own. On a 75 lb bike that is the one place the choice really costs you: if you park outside and charge inside, the Packer asks you to bring the whole bike.
The published fit range. Velotric publishes 5'1" to 6'4" for the Nomad step-through and 5'6" to 6'9" for the high-step — between them the widest span on this site, and the 6'9" figure is the tallest rider accommodated anywhere here. For the Packer, Velotric publishes no rider height at all. That is the gap most worth pressing them on, because a cargo frame is exactly where standover and reach decide whether you can hold a loaded bike upright at a standstill.
Some of the specification detail. The Nomad publishes a 46T chainring, 170 mm cranks, a 13–34T 8-speed cassette and a KMC chain. The Packer publishes "Shimano 8-speed" and nothing more.
Range, done as arithmetic
Velotric attaches the same footnote to every figure it publishes: a 187-lb rider, PAS 1, flat roads. It is the only brand on this site that states the conditions behind a range claim, and we repeat them every time we quote one.

the Packer pedalling, and the Nomad on the throttle alone
Velotric’s own numbers say that pedalling the Packer costs the same per mile as riding the Nomad without pedalling. That is the extra five pounds, the 20-inch rear wheel and the cargo frame showing up in the energy, before you have put anything on the rack.
Both sets of conditions imply an empty rack, which is the part to hold on to. A fat-tire bike at moderate assist realistically draws 18 to 25Wh per mile, so 691Wh ÷ 20 ≈ 35 miles for the Nomad in ordinary use. Load the Packer properly — a passenger, or a hundred pounds of shopping — and the draw climbs well past 30Wh per mile, which puts 691.2Wh ÷ 30 ≈ 23 miles. Plan on 20 to 25 miles fully loaded and treat anything beyond that as a good day. Why claimed range is never the range you get covers where headline figures come from.
The sensor neither of them fixes
Both bikes use a cadence sensor. On a cadence bike the motor engages a beat after the pedals start turning and holds a fixed output until you stop, so pushing harder changes nothing and setting off in traffic takes a little management. On machines of 70 and 75 lb that lag is more noticeable than it would be on a light frame.
This is the odd thing about Velotric’s range, and it is worth knowing before you spend $2,199: the cheapest of the three bikes, the T1 ST Plus at $1,399, is the one with the torque sensor. Several bikes elsewhere on this site under $1,600 have torque sensors too. The decision
Ask one question and answer it honestly: what goes on the back?
If the answer is a rucksack, a laptop and a D-lock, buy the Nomad 1 Plus. It is $300 cheaper, four to five pounds lighter, better value per watt-hour, floats on surfaces the Packer will not touch, brings its battery indoors and tells you in writing whether it fits you. Everything the Packer adds is capability you would be paying for and never using.
If the answer is a passenger, two children, or a shop that fills a crate, buy the Packer 1. The 176 lb rack rating, the four-piston brakes and the low deck are not garnish; they are the reason the bike exists, and no rack bolted to a Nomad turns it into this. Accept the integrated battery, ask Velotric for a rider-height range before you order, and remember that the range figures assume nothing on the rack.
Is the Packer 1 worth $300 more than the Nomad 1 Plus?+
Only if you carry things. The two share a 750W motor, 75 Nm, a cadence sensor, a 440 lb total payload and effectively the same battery — 691Wh against 691.2Wh. The $300 buys the 176 lb rack rating, four-piston brakes on 180 mm rotors, the mixed 26-inch and 20-inch wheels, fitted fenders, a dual-leg kickstand and an IPX6 rating. It costs four to five pounds, a removable battery and a published rider-height range. If your load is a bag and a lock, the Nomad is the better bike and the cheaper one.
Do the two bikes have the same battery?+
Effectively, yes. Velotric publishes 691Wh for the Nomad 1 Plus and 48V 14.4Ah for the Packer 1, which multiplies out to 691.2Wh — a fifth of a watt-hour apart. What differs is how it is mounted. The Nomad’s pack is removable; the Packer’s is a lockable integrated down-tube battery that cannot come indoors without the bike. Because the capacity is the same and the price is not, the energy costs more on the Packer: $1,899 ÷ 691 = $2.75 per watt-hour against $2,199 ÷ 691.2 = $3.18.
How far will each one really go?+
Velotric claims up to 55 miles assisted and 52 on throttle for the Nomad, and up to 52 assisted and 45 on throttle for the Packer, all with the same footnote: a 187-lb rider using PAS 1 on flat roads. Divide it and the Nomad implies about 12.6Wh per mile assisted, the Packer about 13.3Wh. Real fat-tire riding at moderate assist draws 18 to 25Wh per mile, so 691Wh ÷ 20 ≈ 35 miles for the Nomad. The Packer with a load aboard draws far more; plan on 20 to 25 miles fully loaded.
Why are four-piston brakes a bigger deal than the rotor size?+
Because 180 mm rotors are common on this site — VTUVIA and EUNORAU fit them too, and only Velotric’s T1 ST Plus runs anything smaller. Four pistons are not common: every other caliper we cover is a two-piston. More pistons press a longer pad against the rotor with more even force, which gives more braking for the same effort at the lever and much better resistance to fade. On a 75 lb bike rated to carry 176 lb on the rack, that is the difference between stopping and nearly stopping. Velotric publishes neither a rotor size nor a piston count for the Nomad.
What class are these bikes?+
Velotric states Class 2 for the Packer 1: 20 MPH by default, 25 MPH unlocked. For the Nomad 1 Plus it states a 20 MPH top speed and no class designation at all, which is unusual given that it gives one for both of the other bikes in the range. With a removable thumb throttle at 20 MPH the Nomad reads as a Class 2 bike, but that is our reading of the specification rather than Velotric’s claim. If a class designation matters where you ride, ask Velotric for it in writing before you order.
Can I just fit a rack to the Nomad and save the $300?+
You can fit a rack, but you cannot buy the rating. Velotric publishes 176 lb for the Packer’s rear rack — the only rack load rating stated for a bike on this site — and that number describes the frame and rear triangle underneath the rack as much as the rack itself. A rack bolted to the Nomad carries what that rack is rated to carry — VTUVIA’s separately-sold rack for the Zeal LT7, by way of comparison, is rated to 50 lb. If you are carrying a passenger or a child seat, the Packer is not an upgrade to the Nomad, it is a different bike.
